Beats for a Better Future: Building a Music Studio for The Hunter Point Family Youth
The Hunters Point Family has a vision to establish a long-term presence in the community, represented by their project to acquire a community center building along Third Street in Hunters Point. They recently received a $25,000 capacity building grant to make a down payment on such a property, which will house their administrative offices, a juice bar/produce stand, and a state-of-the art music recording and film studio.
The studio will be managed by HPF alumni, and classes in writing, recording, digital editing, mixing, and engineering will be taught by the HPF alumni group, the Bread Me Out Family. Bread Me Out has successfully completed and distributed/sold three albums and several collaborative mix-tapes. Their most recent album, "Millions in the Making" produced by platinum producer "Tone Capone", (who has produced award winning recordings for Tupac, Jay-Z and Scarface) was recorded and produced in their mentor's home recording studio in Antioch. Moving to a new space, with the addition of updated equipment, will allow these young men to mentor the rest of the 300 boys and girls in the program, many of whom are excited to start making music themselves after the success of the Bread Me Out project.
The goal of this campaign is to raise $6125 to purchase studio equipment that will allow the whole community to participate in a constructive, arts-based program, giving meaningful work to the older youth who have already learned studio skills as mentors, and giving girls and boys alike the chance to express themselves creatively and learn the marketable skill of studio production.
The home studio they have been working in currently is equipped with a keyboard, mikes, and digi-design audio equipment, in addition to Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools software. A local philanthropist recently donated four G4 computers which will be available to be used in the new studio.
Our goal is to purchase:
- Pro Tools HD 7.4 Software - $199
- MPC 5000 sampler - $2500
- Mackie MR8 Monitor speakers - $279
- YAMAHA HS10W Sub woofer - $500
- MACKIE CFX 16 mkII mixing desk - $649
- AVALON M5 microphone preamp - $1600
- Studio Headphones x2 SONY PRO MDR 7506 - $198
- Various Cables - $200
... everything that is needed by the Hunters Point Family and the girls and boys of Bayview/Hunters Point to complete their dream of having a fully functional music studio in their new building with which they can complete a song to professional release quality standards.
You can HELP!
Giveback dedicates this project to the memory of Otto Schutt, a loved member of the music, arts, and technology communities in San Francisco who fought a heroic battle with cancer in 2008. Otto had been working with Hunters Point Family since 1998. Giveback is working with Otto's BassCamp Foundation to raise the funds for this project both on and offline. BassCamp's mission is to better the world through promoting health, music and youth development throughout many different communities. 100% of net proceeds* from your donation will do directly to purchase the equipment needed for the studio.
* Net proceeds are defined as all donations made to this Campaign, minus reimbursements to Giveback and BassCamp for promotional and merchandise expenses related to this Campaign, if such expenses are incurred.
